DAY 4
This morning we woke up at 6 AM after a night of rain in the
jungle, which is apparently cold (their winter), and ate a breakfast of yucca
and eggs. We then walked to town for the
first time which took 30 minutes. Once
we got there, Ricky and Jack participated in a patriotic ceremony for Puerto Maldonado
day. We then proceeded to continue to
clear the garden. At this point Ricky,
Mac, Alexi, Justin, and Jack went with Johan to carry wood from deep in the
jungle to the school. It was very heavy
but luckily we were ripped due to stretching earlier, led by Ricky and Jack
(our leaders of the day). At the same
time, Autumn, James, and Ms. Butler brought 50 kilo bags of fertilizer to the
garden in a wheelbarrow to use as nutrients for our planting efforts. After some down time we played soccer with
the students where we won 6-2. Next, we
circled up in the center of the school garden and did a hand squeeze challenge
before planting small trees, each of us was paired with a local student. Next, we went and had lunch with our respective
families and towards the end of lunch, some of the Gilman/RPCS students
participated in a soccer game behind the house of one of the families.
Playing with
the kids was an enlightening experience for both the local kids and us
students. Once everyone returned to the school, we began working in groups to
plant some of the first items in the garden. With a lot of teamwork, we were
able to begin planting the front row of trees in the hot sun. Due to the long duration
of the day, we were all very tired and ready to rest. With the influence of a
few students, a meditation session was held to help us relax. After meditation,
a couple of Gilman/RPCS students played in a soccer game with some of the older
local kids. We then all went to dinner with our local families before returning
to the school. After nightfall, we hiked back to the Saona (anaconda) shelter.
The group leaders of the day Jack and Ricky led an ANCHOR session just before
everyone went to clean up and go to sleep. (Anchors stands for Appreciations,
News, Concerns, Hopes, Obscurities/Fun Facts, and a reading – It is held every evening to wrap up activities).
